Sports & Performance Psychology

While I have always had a passion for sports (Track & Field; high school and college), I learned to swim as a mature adult. By applying techniques of performance psychology, I overcame my fear of water. Starting practically at square one (non-swimmer, and fear of water) I developed into a competitive swimmer of open water and have completed over 30 triathlons over a 12 year period.

During this process, I have both mastered and taught sports psychology skills including relaxation breathing, self hypnosis, positive self-talk, transformational visualization, and performance meditation. These sports-based methods transformed my internal psychology from fear of immersion in the pool to a competitive attitude in the sport of triathlons. I am also a member and active participant in USA Masters Track and Field. My personal experiences and extensive training in sports psychology have enhanced my appreciation of the struggles, distress, and goals of athletes.

I am a veteran sport psychologist that has worked with athletes at the high school, college, and professional levels to enhance their performance in their respective sports. I have also made presentations about sports psychology to sports teams and to professional organizations. I have made numerous presentations to the National Football League regarding the psychology of sports and life skills. Since 1999, I have been the sports psychology consultant to the Oakland Raiders professional football team. In this regard, I have facilitated trainings on sports psychology, life skills training, worked with individual players, and consulted to coaching staff.

I am available to consult with the individual athletes, coaches, and teams.
